Research has highlighted that digital communication platforms have become a vital resource for families navigating the transition back to educational routines.

A survey commissioned by home appliance manufacturer Beko has revealed that more than four out of five parents who use digital messaging groups for school communication consider them indispensable.

The study, which questioned one thousand parents of children aged between six and eleven, found that almost two-thirds would struggle to remember significant school occasions without these instant messaging channels.

Non-uniform days featured prominently among events most likely to be forgotten, cited by 37 percent of respondents, followed by sports days at 32 percent and teacher training inset days at 22 percent.

The September return to school presents particular challenges, with three-quarters of those surveyed identifying this period as the most demanding phase of the academic calendar.

One in five parents acknowledged that access to school communication groups helps make this transition more manageable.

Bedtime and morning schedule readjustment emerged as the primary difficulty reported by 41 percent of participants, while 38 percent identified the daily struggle of rousing children and ensuring they reach the school gate on time as their greatest obstacle.

Additional pressures included organising packed lunches at 25 percent, while ten percent cited the logistical challenge of getting children into vehicles and arranging the customary first-day photograph.

A notable proportion of parents leave preparations until the final moment, with 21 percent admitting to this approach.

Practical tasks such as arranging haircuts at 35 percent, purchasing school footwear at 25 percent and laundering uniforms at 16 percent frequently become rushed undertakings as term time approaches.

The research, conducted through independent polling organisation OnePoll, indicated that children experience their own morning difficulties, with 52 percent identifying the task of rising from bed as the most problematic aspect of school mornings.

Thirty-four percent reported consistent difficulties with departing the household punctually.

Mixed emotions characterise the eve of the new term, with 43 percent of children experiencing both anticipation and anxiety.

While the overwhelming majority of children depend on parental assistance for school preparation at 84 percent, parents identified different aids as most useful.

Thirty-four percent credited alarm clocks, ten percent nominated washing machines and nine percent highlighted refrigerators as essential household items during this period.

Lou Beckett, a former classroom teacher and mother of two children, has collaborated with Beko to establish a digital support service for families.

Beckett emphasised the practical realities of term commencement, noting that morning routines frequently deviate from planned schedules.

She explained that the service aims to provide parents with accessible guidance when unexpected concerns arise during the back-to-school period.

Beko product management lead Salah Sun commented on the annual nature of the September transition, observing that family routines shift rapidly from holiday schedules to school requirements.

Sun highlighted the importance of reliable household appliances during demanding periods of family life.

The investigation indicated that households typically require approximately two weeks to fully readjust to academic term patterns.

During the initial week, experts advise a gradual approach to re-establishing evening schedules, allowing children to recover from the summer break rather than implementing strict new expectations immediately.

Parents are encouraged to coordinate transportation arrangements and extracurricular commitments through shared scheduling systems accessible to all family members.

Morning meal preparation can be simplified by positioning breakfast items within reach of older children, fostering independence while reducing parental workload during the busy pre-school period.

The most frequently cited sources of parental stress during school transitions included re-establishing consistent sleep patterns, morning wake-up routines, lunch preparation, commute logistics and supporting children experiencing first-day anxiety.

Additional challenges encompassed locating misplaced belongings, evening meal planning, managing before and after-school care arrangements, ensuring children consume breakfast, labelling equipment and maintaining dental hygiene.

Practical preparations often delayed until the final moments included arranging haircuts, purchasing correctly sized footwear and laundering recently unpacked uniforms.

The research also identified challenges around remembering teacher names, completing outstanding holiday assignments and acquiring necessary stationery supplies.
