In certain under-resourced districts of the capital, individuals managing HIV are finding that shared dining provides far more than nourishment, offering companionship, self-respect and optimism.
The Food Chain, the sole UK organisation specialising in nutritional support for those with HIV, has secured a £5,000 donation from the London Freemasons. This funding will support its Eating Together initiative, which delivers group meals twice weekly in Stepney.
The charity was established through voluntary effort in 1988 and assists some of London’s most vulnerable HIV-positive individuals by offering dietary evaluations, grocery deliveries, prepared meals brought to homes, and emergency financial assistance for essential cooking equipment.
The majority of those accessing the service arrive via NHS referrals and can participate in communal lunch sessions for up to three months, amounting to 24 meals. These gatherings seek to address loneliness, build self-assurance, and provide an accepting atmosphere free from judgement.
Anna Brewster, chief executive of The Food Chain, stated that as a small organisation receiving no government funding, such contributions significantly enhance their capacity to deliver essential services to those requiring them most. She expressed sincere gratitude on behalf of staff, trustees, volunteers and service users for this generous support.
Many of those using the service subsequently become volunteers, contributing their personal experience to the programme. Each dining session includes a health-focused presentation from a visiting speaker, and attendees are welcome to take surplus food with them.

The Food Chain benefits from a Medical Advisory Board and a committed workforce of over 150 volunteers.
