The Swedish furniture retailer is set to introduce a pre-owned trading platform for British shoppers.
The upcoming digital marketplace will enable members of the retailer’s loyalty programme to purchase and sell gently used IKEA items directly with other customers within their neighbourhoods.
The service will strictly deal with IKEA-branded merchandise, prohibiting the listing of furniture or home goods produced by competing companies.
IKEA launching pre-owned trading platform
A company representative explained that the initiative forms part of IKEA’s ongoing efforts to enhance domestic living and assist shoppers in finding desired products.
The marketplace represents a significant move towards establishing a hub that streamlines access to previously owned IKEA furnishings.
The objective is to ensure that transferring cherished IKEA pieces becomes effortless.
A reliable and dynamic environment is being developed to enable IKEA Family members to conduct transactions swiftly and conveniently.
The aim is to make both purchasing and selling second-hand IKEA goods straightforward, accessible and satisfying.
The British rollout comes after experimental programmes in the Spanish and Norwegian capitals, which commenced in summer 2024.
Throughout the testing phase, vendors could submit pictures of their furniture before the platform generated corresponding product imagery, measurements, assembly guidance and recommended pricing.
Participants in the trials were also given the option of receiving payment in cash or an IKEA gift card valued at fifteen percent above the negotiated selling amount.
Purchasers and sellers would subsequently coordinate the local collection or delivery of items.
The concept garnered positive feedback, resulting in full implementation across Spain and Norway, followed by introductions in Portugal and Poland during 2025, Sweden from January 2026 and Belgium the following April.
The company noted that consumers in the countries involved demonstrated particular interest in pre-owned bedroom collections, storage solutions and seating items.
The marketplace will function independently from IKEA’s established Take-back scheme, which enables shoppers to return qualifying furniture to the company in exchange for store vouchers.
During the company’s 2025 fiscal year, approximately 686,500 pre-owned items were recovered through the Take-back initiative, marking a thirty-nine percent rise compared to the prior twelve months.
Products retrieved via Take-back are subsequently offered for sale through dedicated second-hand sections within stores.
Additional information regarding the British launch, encompassing commencement dates and participation procedures, will be disclosed by IKEA shortly.
