200 workers at risk as John Lewis restructures stores

John Lewis is reviewing plans to eliminate several hundred positions as part of proposals to discontinue certain in-store operations.

The retail chain has put forward suggestions to cease its foreign currency exchange counters and gift wrapping facilities, a move that could affect approximately 200 employees across its shop network.

Currently, these facilities operate in 30 branches, with gift wrapping stations present in 25 locations. However, changing shopping habits have prompted the business to assess the current setup.

A company representative stated that consumers are progressively opting to purchase the wide selection of currencies available through the website, appreciating the option of home delivery or collection from one of their shops.

As efforts concentrate on modernising this offering to align with evolving customer expectations, proposals include shutting both the currency exchange counters and gift wrapping operations.

Consequently, the company is beginning consultations with employees who currently provide these services.

This represents a decision reached only after considerable deliberation, and assistance will be provided to affected staff throughout the consultation period alongside exploration of redeployment possibilities.

Of the 200 potentially impacted workers, 125 hold permanent full-time contracts. The proposed changes remain undecided, with ongoing employee discussions.

The plans emerge following a pre-tax deficit of £21 million in the twelve months ending January 31 2026, even though revenue climbed 5 per cent to £13.4 billion.

The retailer indicated it seeks to provide gift wrapping facilities in a manner offering greater accessibility.
