A former volunteer named Barbara Sved has received a British Empire Medal in recognition of her commitment to supporting adults with learning disabilities.
The honour, announced as part of the King’s Birthday Honours List, acknowledges over two decades of voluntary work with Harrow Mencap—rebranded as Community Connex—after she stepped away from her career early.
Throughout her involvement with Community Connex, Barbara has organised activities centred on enjoyment, inclusion, and health, ranging from seated fitness routines to music, movement, problem-solving games, and social competitions.
Barbara Sved expressed that discovering she had been recognised with a BEM in the King’s Birthday Honours for her work with disabled and learning-disabled adults came as both a shock and a joy.
She explained that fostering an inviting space where individuals feel relaxed, valued, and able to participate at their own speed has consistently been the driving principle.
One notable achievement has been establishing a vocal group approximately four years ago, giving members opportunities to entertain audiences locally while developing self-assurance.
She noted that the ensemble’s advancement has been extraordinary, with members growing in assurance and now presenting their performances with passion and pride.
Observing their development and witnessing the pleasure they derive from entertaining others has ranked among the most rewarding moments of her voluntary work.
Barbara now facilitates singing sessions across various groups within Community Connex, extending her reach and fostering broader involvement.
She stated her gratitude extends to every employee, fellow volunteer, relative, and companion who has encouraged her throughout the years. Obtaining a BEM represents a significant distinction, yet the true reward has been sharing this period with such remarkable individuals.
