Five fresh ‘safe havens’ – locations offering assistance to women, girls and anybody experiencing fear or intimidation – have been established throughout Harrow.

These safe spaces welcome any individual who feels frightened, vulnerable or in danger and requires prompt help.

The venues encompass charitable organisations, libraries, volunteer groups and community centres, forming part of an expanding initiative aimed at enhancing people’s sense of security and wellbeing in communal areas.

The newest sites incorporated into the programme comprise Citizens Advice Harrow, Hillview Family Hub, Buchanan Court Care Home, Crowning Greatness Community Hub and the Moat Café situated at Headstone Manor.

The initiative brings the borough’s total network to 26.

The project operates in collaboration with the Safer Business Network and emerged following input from local residents regarding ways to enhance safety throughout the area.

Cllr Pritesh Patel, who oversees cleaner streets and public safety, expressed that nobody in Harrow should ever feel afraid or endangered. He noted satisfaction that the planned number of Safe Havens for this year has been surpassed.

These spaces demonstrate what becomes possible when the council, community groups and local organisations collaborate to support one another and prioritise residents.

When someone feels unsafe or anxious, the aim is for them to recognise that help is close at hand. The Safe Havens provide that sense of comfort and a location to rest until the subsequent step feels achievable.

Developing the Safe Havens network forms one of 30 principal actions outlined in the corporate plan to rebuild pride in Harrow and maintain cleanliness and safety across the borough.

Safe Havens display a visible sticker in their windows and are available at no cost, with qualified employees ready to provide private assistance. Workers can help individuals reach a friend, relative or emergency services. They may also refer people to additional local resources as required.

The programme forms part of Harrow Council’s wider efforts to tackle harassment and enhance public safety throughout the community.
