Research has revealed that 25 per cent of employees are now undertaking increased business travel compared to the pre-pandemic era.

An examination of 2,000 adults who had travelled for professional purposes within the preceding three years discovered that 18 per cent had completed 12 or more work-related journeys throughout the past year.

The data indicated that May, September and April represented the peak periods for such travel, in that order.

The standard employer provision for overnight accommodation stood at £165, while daily allocations for sustenance and transport typically amounted to £68.

The investigation was commissioned by Hotels.com as part of its broader Booked for Business report, which established that 48 per cent of respondents considered destinations offering a combination of professional obligations and recreational opportunities to be optimal for business travel.

This finding aligned with what the report characterised as the rising significance of blending business and leisure activities, commonly referred to as bleisure travel.

Among those surveyed, London, New York and Paris emerged as the cities most emblematic of this trend, positioning them as leading choices for corporate travel.

The research also highlighted that business travellers increasingly prioritised the supplementary benefits associated with their accommodation.

Twenty-six per cent of participants indicated that such perks were fundamental to an satisfactory hotel experience.

Complimentary morning meals were valued by 51 per cent of respondents, while room upgrades and flexible arrival times were considered important by 32 per cent and 26 per cent respectively.

Regarding practical requirements, 57 per cent identified a reliable high-speed internet connection as an essential consideration.

The survey, conducted through OnePoll, additionally explored behavioural differences between professional and personal contexts.

Fifty-two per cent of participants believed they exhibited distinct character traits in workplace settings, with 21 per cent describing themselves as more outgoing during leisure time.

Eighteen per cent reported adopting leadership roles in their careers while adopting a more passive approach in their private lives.

Thirty-nine per cent identified as systematic planners within their professional environments, yet only 22 per cent assumed responsibility for arranging travel logistics during personal time.

With regard to travel habits specifically, 48 per cent acknowledged rising earlier when travelling for business purposes than they would during recreational breaks, while 49 per cent indicated greater punctuality when away on professional trips.

Melanie Fish, a travel specialist representing Hotels.com, whose platform enables users to store travel preferences, identify hotels suited to business requirements, revisit previously enjoyed properties and accumulate rewards on work journeys, commented that contemporary business travel extended beyond merely progressing between meetings.

She noted that travellers sought accommodations and destinations capable of accommodating both aspects of their character, from dependable connectivity and early dining options ahead of significant presentations to convenient locations and comfortable spaces for relaxation following their commitments.
