Theo James has commented on speculation that Meghan Markle could appear in the upcoming potential third series of Netflix’s crime drama The Gentlemen.

Rumours have circulated regarding the former actress’s potential return to the screen should the Guy Ritchie-created programme receive another renewal.

James, who plays the lead role in the production, discussed the gossip during an interview conducted after the launch of the second series.

He informed the Press Association that he had encountered outlandish reports, including one suggesting Prince Harry might become involved with the project.

Fellow cast member Kaya Scodelario questioned whether Harry Styles was the intended reference, with James clarifying that the Duke of Sussex was the subject of the rumour.

Scodelario observed that people could simply invent such stories, noting her initial belief that James was being truthful.

Earlier reports indicated that negotiations had taken place concerning the Duchess of Sussex appearing in the show should it be recommissioned, although the streaming platform has not officially confirmed a third instalment.

Prior to her royal marriage, Markle gained recognition for portraying Rachel Zane in the American legal drama Suits.

She briefly returned to performing with an appearance as herself in the comedy film Close Personal Friends, which also featured Lily Collins and Brie Larson.

The couple, accompanied by their offspring Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, arrived in Britain last week, marking their first extended visit in six years since relocating to the United States.

The family is anticipated to remain in this country for a considerable duration, though specifics regarding their itinerary have not been disclosed.

During the same interview, James addressed the creative choices behind the ongoing second series, currently available for streaming.

He explained that the rationale for continuing the programme necessitated exploring darker and more intricate narrative territory, cautioning against mere repetition of previous material.

The storyline follows James’s character, Duke Eddie Horniman, who inherits his deceased father’s rural estate only to uncover an extensive subterranean marijuana operation beneath the property.

An entertainment industry commentator suggested that Markle would generate considerable interest from casting directors and producers should she opt to resume her acting career on a permanent basis.

Jonathan Shalit, head of the talent agency InterTalent Rights Group, expressed that professionals throughout the sector would enthusiastically welcome the opportunity to meet with her and conduct auditions.

He emphasised that while automatic role assignment would not occur, professional doors would certainly open for her.
