King reiterates Harry and Meghan have no royal duties after UK return

King Charles III has affirmed that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle retain the status of private individuals following their recent return to Britain.

The monarch emphasised that the couple would not be undertaking official royal responsibilities.

Clarification became necessary after the couple’s arrival in the UK on August 26 generated inquiries from government agencies and military organisations seeking definitive guidance on their position.

A communication from Lord Benyon, who serves as Lord Chamberlain, addressed these queries directly.

The correspondence confirmed the couple’s standing following their relocation back to these shores.

The letter addressed numerous requests received for clarification.

It outlined that the monarch had instructed the sharing of specific information to prevent any ambiguity.

According to the correspondence, the position established in January 2020 when the couple stepped back from performing representative functions on behalf of the Crown remains unchanged.

They are not categorised as working members of the royal household.

This arrangement, separate from the official duties carried out by working royals, provides the couple with personal flexibility, including financial autonomy and privacy protections according to their preferences.

The documentation confirmed that no alteration to their status has occurred and that they do not employ their His and Her Royal Highness titles.

Their charitable activities are conducted entirely independently.

The monarch is understood to have directed the Lord Chamberlain to distribute this guidance specifically to address uncertainty regarding the couple’s standing, particularly in light of their return to the country.

Prince Harry is anticipated to be present at the WellChild awards ceremony, traditionally scheduled for mid-September.

Sources indicate Meghan is evaluating possibilities for expanding her involvement with British charitable organisations.

Their offspring, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, are reportedly commencing their education at UK institutions near the family’s reported rural home.

The Lord Chamberlain’s correspondence was additionally circulated to Lord Lieutenants, who serve as the monarch’s representatives throughout the counties of England and Wales.

The communication concluded that the couple’s royal titles remain unused and are effectively in suspension.

Their charitable engagements represent personal choices undertaken independently.

In essence, they occupy a position equivalent to private citizens who maintain commercial and humanitarian interests.
