A 71-year-old healthcare assistant is preparing to throw herself from an aircraft at 15,000 feet to raise money for a local hospice.

Rose Tallon, who has spent the past 11 years working at St Luke’s Hospice in Harrow, is scheduled to complete her tandem skydive on September 18.

The challenge was undertaken after initial donations came flooding in following the launch of her campaign.

Her original fundraising goal stood at £1,000, though this was swiftly increased to £3,000 given the volume of contributions received.

She described feeling terrified but determined, noting that her passion for the organisation and the people it serves motivated her to proceed despite her fear.

According to her, if the stunt enables the hospice to support additional families, the experience would justify itself.

Originally hailing from County Meath in the Republic of Ireland, Tallon has accumulated half a century of experience across nursing, teaching, health, and social care sectors.

Within the hospice setting, her responsibilities include assisting patients experiencing complicated medical symptoms and ensuring those nearing the end of their lives can pass away peacefully while maintaining their dignity.

The facility offers complimentary palliative and terminal care to residents of both Harrow and Brent, delivering these services either within the inpatient ward or through home visits.

Tallon expressed hope that her aerial endeavour would encourage others to contribute towards the hospice’s ongoing work.

Staff at St Luke’s support individuals diagnosed with life-shortening conditions, facilitating their ability to live meaningfully and treasure every remaining moment.

The institution delivers specialist palliative care free of charge at its base and within patients’ residences, extending psychological and logistical assistance to relatives during difficult periods.

Funding for most operations derives substantially from charitable donations and community-driven fundraising initiatives.
