Michael Sheen to take over Richard Osman’s House of Games

Published on

Richard Osman has disclosed that his House Of Games production team responded with enthusiasm when he informed them actor Michael Sheen would be assuming presenting duties following his own exit from the programme.

The television presenter and novelist, who is 55 years old, revealed in March that he would be stepping down from the BBC quiz format, with Michael Sheen scheduled to commence the role in September.

The programme premiered in 2017 and features four celebrities competing across various general knowledge challenges throughout five consecutive days.

Contestants vie for Richard Osman-branded rewards and the title of weekly champion.

According to the programme description, the format pits four well-known personalities against each other in tests of trivia ability, with contestants aiming to conclude the week victoriously and claim the exclusive prizes unavailable elsewhere.

During discussions about his departure, Osman explained that the production involves filming 110 episodes annually, which renders him unable to undertake writing work for several months afterward.

Despite this constraint, he was reluctant to abandon the programme entirely and risk its cancellation, citing the dedication of the production team and his affection for the staff.

Osman consulted with producers regarding a potential succession arrangement that would satisfy BBC requirements while enabling him to depart and allowing the series to continue.

He anticipated complications in finding a suitable replacement.

During these conversations, a producer suggested Michael Sheen had expressed interest in hosting the show.

Osman noted that conventional departures typically prompt colleagues to express sadness and promises to miss the departing individual.

In this instance, however, the response centred entirely on the prospect of Michael Sheen joining the production.

An on-screen transition to Michael Sheen is planned.

Osman characterised this handover as resembling post-credit sequences found in superhero films, though without requiring viewers to endure hours of credits beforehand.

Osman gained prominence through his role co-presenting Pointless and has subsequently prioritised his literary work.

He is scheduled to front the forthcoming ITV competition The Golden Elevators.
