Nigel Farage has announced he will be making a declaration about his future involvement in public life this afternoon, according to sources familiar with the matter.
The announcement comes as the Reform UK figurehead confronts heightened examination regarding financial assistance he received from a person convicted of fraud.
According to reports, the Essex MP’s longstanding associate, George Cottrell, had covered costs for protection and personnel in the twelve months preceding his election to Parliament.
Mr Cottrell was sentenced to eight months imprisonment in the United States in 2017 after admitting guilt to a wire fraud charge.
Electoral regulators have been pressed to examine the claims against Mr Farage.
The declaration is scheduled for 2pm on Tuesday, July 7.
The timing follows an encounter the previous day when a Sky News reporter approached Mr Farage about the allegations upon his return to Britain at an airport.
Mr Farage responded with visible irritation when questioned about whether it had been an error to fail to declare presents from his associate.
In remarks to the reporter, he indicated there would be severe repercussions and told the journalist to cease contact with his family, describing the organisation’s actions as unacceptable.
A Sky News spokesperson stated that no one from Mr Farage’s family had been contacted by the broadcaster.
Subsequently, the Reform UK leader published a statement on X asserting that Sky News was spreading falsehoods, claiming they had pursued his daughter at her residence shortly after The Times disclosed his family’s address, and condemning the media’s conduct.
Mr Farage is under examination regarding financial support from a convicted fraudster and a substantial five million pound contribution from a Reform UK benefactor.
The Reform UK leader is under pressure after reports indicated that his longtime associate George Cottrell had covered security and staffing expenses in the year preceding his election.
Labour has requested that the Electoral Commission examine whether the support ought to have been declared, given that Mr Farage held a significant position within Reform prior to his return to politics.
The party has also questioned Mr Cottrell’s eligibility as a donor, noting uncertainty about his inclusion on a UK electoral register at the relevant time.
Labour Party chairwoman Anna Turley formally requested an investigation from the Electoral Commission.
She stated that it had become evident Mr Farage may have contravened not only parliamentary regulations but potentially the law itself, and could no longer dismiss scrutiny as an internal matter, calling on him to take responsibility for the controversy and demonstrate he had not been secretly flouting regulations.
Mr Farage has maintained he has committed no misconduct following a Sunday Times investigation into his relationship with Mr Cottrell.
He is already subject to a parliamentary inquiry concerning a five million pound donation from Reform donor Christopher Harborne prior to his election as an MP.
