The fast food giant has launched a novel addition to its offerings that has sparked debate among customers.
The chain, recognised for its McFlurry desserts, has traditionally provided the frozen treat consisting of soft serve vanilla ice cream combined with popular additions such as Oreo pieces, Smarties and Cadbury chocolate.
However, its newest creation takes an unconventional path.
The fresh Hot Honey McFlurry, part of the company’s recent menu refresh, merges the traditional soft serve with a drizzle of fiery honey sauce.
Hot honey has grown increasingly popular in recent times, with its blend of sweetness and heat appearing in dips and sauces throughout the culinary world.
McDonald’s has now capitalised on this trend — though initial response has been varied.
The combination has attracted a spectrum of opinions from disparate groups of McDonald’s enthusiasts.
Writing on the McDonald’s Reddit forum, one individual noted that their workplace held a tasting session and they were able to sample the new hot honey McFlurry, stating that they found themselves uncertain about it. They described the flavour as quite distinctive and unlike anything they had previously experienced, adding that while they remained unconvinced, they believed the item would likely gain significant popularity.
Not everyone embraced the concept, with one responder expressing that every hot honey product they had sampled had been unpleasant and expressing frustration that this particular trend showed no signs of disappearing.
Another contributor expressed a desire for the return of hot toffee sundaes instead, questioning why the company could not simply reintroduce them.
A third individual stated they struggled to envision how the flavours would complement each other, arguing that vanilla and hot honey simply do not pair well.
Nevertheless, some individuals championed the concept, with one observing that honey combined with vanilla ice cream had existed for considerable time, essentially making this version simply that concept with added heat.
The Hot Honey McFlurry is available exclusively through the app — meaning it can only be purchased via the McDonald’s application or the McDelivery delivery platform.
Those who order it receive a plain cup of McFlurry vanilla ice cream, accompanied by a separate container of the new McDonald’s Hot Honey Dip.
The dip is characterised as a spicy sauce containing honey and chilli pepper and can also be purchased independently or paired with Mozzarella Dippers.
