A charitable organisation is striving to narrow the educational achievement divide in British schools.

The Akshaya Patra UK’s out-of-hours initiative, branded as Empower Hour, provides assistance to youngsters from financially struggling households.

The scheme blends focused teaching with wholesome food and is now established in 16 educational institutions nationwide, including Cedars Manor School in Harrow.

Every Empower Hour gathering supplies a warm vegetarian dinner alongside sixty minutes of scholarly aid intended for pupils susceptible to academic regression.

Cedars Manor School, where 35.1 per cent of pupils qualify for complimentary school dinners, accommodates 30 participants ranging from three to eleven years old through this venture.

Meetings occur twice weekly on Mondays and Fridays following the school day and continue until half past four in the afternoon.

A parent by the name of Bryony mentioned that knowing meals and homework assistance were available two to three times weekly represented an additional ten pounds that could be directed toward heating or electricity costs. She expressed belief that numerous families and communities would find such support advantageous.

An educator at a collaborating institution lauded the initiative’s influence on pupils and caregivers.

They observed that the atmosphere within the school during Empower Hour was wonderful. Youngsters were cementing their knowledge through enjoyable and inventive methods while forging fresh connections with classmates and across various age brackets. Family participation was increasing, which was assisting in removing obstacles for certain parents. The scheme was contributing to strengthening their neighbourhood.

For a quarter of a century, Akshaya Patra has provided sustenance to children in India.

The organisation chose to transplant its approach to Britain after observing escalating rates of youth poverty and disparities in education.

Its British initiative has already served more than 895,000 meals.

Akshaya Patra UK’s Empower Hour commenced operations in 2024 and has recently secured an educational prize at the 2025 MAT Excellence Awards.

Judges commended the initiative’s remarkable efforts in tackling disadvantage and child poverty.

A senior leader at a participating school recounted a participant’s achievement narrative.

They explained that Nevia had previously struggled with Mathematics prior to enrolling in Empower Hour sessions. Nevertheless, across the past six months, she has emerged as the pupil earning the highest number of independent learning credits, not merely within the Empower Hour cohort but across the entire Year 7 year group.
