Duke of Edinburgh marks 10 years of Harrow youth scheme supporting 4,000 kids

A milestone marking ten years of youth-focused community work was commemorated with a royal presence earlier this month.

The Duke of Edinburgh travelled to Harrow School on October 5 to observe the anniversary of the Shaftesbury Enterprise initiative, which has spent a decade forging connections between the school and charitable causes, local community groups, and educational establishments throughout Harrow and the surrounding north-west London region.

The scheme has made a significant impact on young lives, with more than 4,000 children and teenagers benefiting from its programmes within the past twelve months alone.

Headmaster Alastair Land emphasised the school’s conviction that learning transcends traditional classroom boundaries, describing the initiative as a proven method for engaging with nearby schools, charities, and neighbourhood organisations.

Land expressed the institution’s commitment to reaching as many local young people as possible while simultaneously offering Harrow pupils chances to cultivate responsibility, compassion, and leadership abilities.

The headmaster further noted that the success of such initiatives depends entirely on the dedication of partner organisations, and he expressed pride in what collaborative efforts have accomplished over many years.

During the royal visit, the Duke engaged directly with students, educators, volunteers, and representatives from partner organisations involved in the scheme.

Discussions also took place with delegates from established partner schools, among them St Anselm’s Catholic Primary School and Roxeth Primary School.

The visit showcased various community projects, including a joint music initiative where Harrow pupils collaborated with more than 130 primary students from seven different schools.

These younger participants received complimentary weekly vocal training sessions alongside opportunities to perform publicly.

A robotics competition was also highlighted, with children working together to programme Edison robots while developing their teamwork, problem-solving abilities, and digital competencies.

The Duke additionally explored the school farm, an initiative designed to introduce young people to outdoor education, environmental stewardship, and the advantages of engaging with natural surroundings.

Shaftesbury Enterprise has directed more than one million pounds into community projects over the past ten years, supporting efforts intended to broaden educational access, build confidence, and nurture fresh skills.

Approximately one-third of Harrow’s student body participates weekly through more than forty annual initiatives spanning literacy, numeracy, science and technology, music, and youth mentorship.

A representative from Harrow School commented that the royal visit offered a valuable occasion to acknowledge the significance of long-term partnerships in generating opportunities for young people and reinforcing local communities.

The programme aligns with Harrow School’s wider commitment to community involvement, with activities shaped through ongoing consultation with young people and partner organisations.

The engagement drew attention to the constructive outcomes achievable when organisations throughout the borough work together.
