1,057 London schools earn gold for promoting sustainable school journeys

A record number of educational institutions across the capital have been awarded gold accreditation for their efforts in promoting sustainable and safer travel options.

Transport for London confirmed that 1,057 schools have attained gold status through its Travel for Life programme, which celebrates institutions that minimise vehicle usage and promote walking, cycling and other environmentally friendly methods of transportation.

The gold accreditation is valid for three years.

Schools seeking this distinction must complete 48 distinct activities, including classroom assemblies focused on sustainable travel, after-school environmental clubs and practical balance bike training sessions.

According to Lilli Matson, TfL’s chief safety, health and environment officer, understanding safe and sustainable travel practices constitutes an essential life skill.

She praised the dedication of London’s schools in integrating the Travel for Life programme into their educational offerings, noting that this approach helps diminish road hazards and improves air quality while supporting both physical and psychological wellbeing.

Matson observed that gaining the ability to drive, operate a motorcycle or moped, or cycle independently represents a significant milestone for young people as they develop greater independence.

She emphasised the importance of ensuring that individuals possess a solid grasp of highway regulations and comprehend the potential outcomes of their decisions and conduct while travelling.

The recently introduced TfL Navigators initiative delivers this education through engaging and accessible methods tailored for this age group.

Schools qualify for gold accreditation by either decreasing car journeys associated with the school commute by six percent or ensuring that at least 90 percent of morning and afternoon trips utilise sustainable transportation methods.

The TfL Navigators programme, operating as a component of the broader Travel for Life initiative, provides road safety instruction specifically designed for students aged 16 to 18.

Will Norman, serving as the mayor of London’s walking and cycling commissioner, expressed satisfaction that an unprecedented number of schools demonstrate strong commitment to enabling more young people to walk, cycle and use scooters throughout the city.

He highlighted their contributions to enhancing road safety and environmental conditions within their localities.

Norman stated that efforts would continue to build upon this progress, with a goal of extending the programme’s benefits to additional communities.

He urged any schools not yet participating to consider joining the initiative.
