A celebration of heritage, customs and togetherness brought nearly 300 visitors to Victoria Hall in Harrow on September 19 for the Mid-Autumn Festival Family Fun Day.
The gathering, staged by community interest company Together HK CIC, drew attendees from across the capital and neighbouring regions for a programme highlighting Hong Kong and Chinese traditions.
Performances of traditional dance and music anchored the afternoon’s entertainment, while younger visitors took part in a dragon dance activity designed for children.
Families also engaged with lantern riddles, participated in interactive games and sampled cuisine inspired by Hong Kong.
Maggie Cheung, who established and directs Together HK CIC, explained the organisation’s mission centred on ensuring young people developed an understanding of their cultural origins while having hands-on opportunities to engage with time-honoured practices.
The group also sought to introduce these customs to the broader local population.
Cultural activities provided a means of uniting residents, Ms Cheung observed, offering chances to discover more about neighbours, form new connections and foster a deeper sense of community belonging.
A traditional Chinese proverb asserting that a supportive neighbour proves more valuable than a distant relative illustrated the spirit the organisation aimed to cultivate, she added.
Elected representatives joining the festivities included Harrow’s mayor, Councillor Yogesh Teli, and mayoress Neela Teli.
Harrow West Member of Parliament Gareth Thomas and Councillor Rashmi Kalu were also present at the event.
Together HK CIC operates as a London-registered community organisation dedicated to honouring cultural identity, strengthening neighbourhood bonds and facilitating connections between residents.
The event relied on the commitment of the group’s core volunteers and staff members, who prepared activities, arranged performances and provided assistance to families throughout the day.
Ms Cheung expressed appreciation to the organising team and volunteers, alongside performers, partner organisations and sponsors who contributed to the celebration’s success.
The participation of local families and residents proved most meaningful, she noted, as their enjoyment of the gathering embodied the purpose behind Together HK CIC’s foundation.
