Sucre restaurant review: Argentinian sharing plates and live music in Soho

Published on

Sucre occupies a prominent position on Great Marlborough Street, positioning itself as a destination for those seeking Argentinian-inspired cuisine in the heart of Soho.

The establishment operates on a sharing philosophy, with dishes designed to arrive at the centre of the table for collective enjoyment rather than individual consumption.

The menu opens with a Chimichurri Margarita cocktail, establishing a vibrant tone before food service commences.

The chipá, an Argentine cheese bread, proved popular among the opening courses, as did the layered potatoes accompanied by garlic cream and guindilla chillies.

A standout option arrived in the form of smoked beetroot paired with cashew cream and pickled walnuts, while those seeking something lighter found satisfaction in the sea bream tiradito featuring blood orange and shiso.

The sharing format encourages interaction, with diners sampling across the table rather than waiting for individual plates to arrive.

Courses move between guests, prompting repeated selections of particular dishes throughout the meal.

For the main course, sea bass arrived with tamarind jam, offering a delicate preparation with a sweet and tangy accompaniment that complemented rather than dominated the fish.

The Argentine sirloin returned attention to the restaurant’s open-fire cooking heritage, while a side of Trombette courgette with Pecorino Fiore Sardo provided balance to the meat-focused selection.

The dulce de leche fondant with mascarpone ice cream and hazelnuts represented the dessert offering, presenting an indulgent conclusion to the meal.

At approximately eight in the evening, live music commenced, transforming the atmosphere within the venue.

The space, already animated by conversation and the movement of shared plates, acquired an extended quality that encouraged lingering.

The restaurant’s history contributes to its character.

The building previously served as a concert hall for the London College of Music, and the establishment’s Origins programme has reintroduced musical performance to the premises.

This integration of dining, music and historical setting creates an experience that extends beyond the food alone, positioning Sucre as a destination for an evening rather than merely a meal.
