A regular community dining initiative supporting people seeking sanctuary has been highlighted as a model for places of worship throughout the capital.

The Bishop of Stepney, the Right Reverend Rod Green, offered the assessment during an inspection of the Haven Supper Club at Church on the Corner in Islington.

During the visit, the bishop engaged with individuals who have arrived in the United Kingdom as refugees and asylum seekers, alongside neighbourhood residents.

Monthly gatherings at the venue accommodate between 40 and 50 participants for freshly prepared food, musical performances, and fellowship.

The Bishop of Stepney expressed that witnessing church members serving their immediate neighbourhood exemplified the fundamental purpose of religious institutions.

He noted that encountering individuals from diverse global backgrounds sharing the same space demonstrated the genuine warmth and dedication participants hold for one another.

The bishop suggested that Church on the Corner represented an exemplary framework that other congregations throughout London could adapt for implementation within their own localities.

The programme operates under the direction of Reverend Idina Dunmore and Fergus Burnett-Skelding, with organisational support provided by the church community.

The initiative seeks to address loneliness and cultivate connections among attendees through shared meals and artistic pursuits.

The most recent gathering showcased cuisine inspired by Mediterranean traditions alongside a joint creative undertaking examining concepts of relocation, travel, and personal transitions.

Entertainment was provided by the Romany Diamonds, a local musical ensemble featuring three generations of a family with Polish-Romany heritage performing customary folk compositions.
