Research has revealed the technology milestones that defined the early 2000s for British adults, with digital photography, mobile phone ringtones and CD burning emerging as particularly cherished memories from the decade.

A survey involving 2,000 participants discovered that almost half experienced feelings of nostalgia when recalling the gadgets and devices that characterised the first ten years of the millennium.

The use of MP3 players for music playback was cited by 41 percent of respondents, while the practice of selecting tracks for journeys was mentioned by 35 percent.

A further 31 percent recalled the experience of downloading and sharing mobile phone ringtones.

The research indicated that specific sensory triggers could immediately transport adults back to that era.

A memorable song was identified by 39 percent as the most effective reminder, while a recognisable mobile phone ringtone affected 37 percent.

The distinctive sound of a flip phone closing was noted by 26 percent.

Notably, a similar proportion expressed a desire for flip phones to become available again.

The study was conducted by OnePoll and examined how adults personalised their technology during the 2000s.

Forty-one percent reported customising their devices, with 34 percent doing so for enjoyment, 31 percent to establish ownership and 26 percent to express individuality.

The most prevalent modifications involved altering ringtone settings at 65 percent, changing wallpapers at 63 percent and selecting new cases or covers at 57 percent.

Additional personalisation methods included decorative stickers at 38 percent, phone charms at 35 percent and decorative gems or rhinestones at 22 percent.

The findings suggested that one in five participants would welcome the return of device personalisation and accessories in contemporary technology.

A quarter of those surveyed expressed interest in seeing bright or colourful designs revived in current products.

When questioned about their relationship with 2000s technology, 34 percent reported nostalgia primarily for the associated memories, while 31 percent remembered the thrill of acquiring new electronic devices.

Forty-three percent felt nostalgic about the vibrant, playful aesthetic of the period, with a quarter expressing wistfulness for the visual design of technology from that decade.
