Air passengers departing from United Kingdom airports are experiencing significant delays and potential cancellations following a technical fault impacting air traffic control operations.
The disruption is affecting services at Manchester Airport, London Heathrow, and Edinburgh Airport.
NATS, the organisation responsible for air traffic management in the UK, issued a statement indicating that an investigation was underway into the technical problem causing departure disruptions.
Under British legislation, carriers must provide care and assistance to passengers affected by flight cancellations, irrespective of the circumstances behind the disruption.
The UK Civil Aviation Authority has outlined the specific entitlements available to travellers.
These include the provision of accommodation, meals, and transportation between the airport and hotel accommodation when rebooking is necessary for the following day.
According to the regulatory body, airlines are obligated to supply these provisions until passengers can reach their intended destinations, regardless of the duration of the delay or its underlying cause.
When airlines are unable to make arrangements for assistance during widespread disruption, passengers may independently secure their own accommodation and transport, subsequently seeking reimbursement from the carrier.
Receipts for all expenditure should be retained, and costs should remain within reasonable bounds.
The aviation regulator indicated that carriers typically decline reimbursement claims for premium accommodation or alcoholic beverages.
Some airlines publish guidance on acceptable expenditure levels.
Travellers are entitled to select between receiving a complete refund for unused portions of their ticket or accepting an alternative flight to their destination.
Financial compensation may be payable depending on the specific circumstances surrounding the cancellation.
The regulatory authority clarified that compensation does not apply when disruptions stem from extraordinary circumstances, including severe weather conditions, industrial action by airport or air traffic control personnel, or similar events beyond the airline’s control.
Eligibility for compensation also depends on the advance notice provided to passengers and the scheduled departure and arrival times of any replacement flight.
When passengers receive fewer than seven days’ notice of cancellation, compensation entitlements are calculated based on the timings of the offered alternative flight.
No financial compensation is payable when the replacement flight departs no more than one hour ahead of the original scheduled departure time and arrives less than two hours after the originally planned arrival time.
Further information regarding passenger entitlements and compensation eligibility is available through the Civil Aviation Authority’s official channels.
