The United Kingdom’s domestic intelligence agency has opened applications for its summer internship scheme, offering university students an eight-week placement providing practical experience within the national security sector.
The placement is scheduled to run from Monday, June 28 through to Friday, August 20, 2027.
Sessions will be conducted across two locations within the capital’s central and western districts.
Participants will undertake 36 hours of work weekly, operating standard business hours between 9am and 5pm from Monday through Friday.
Compensation for the programme amounts to £4,849 in addition to covered lodging expenses.
Eligibility for the scheme is limited to students currently enrolled in either the penultimate or final year of their university programme during the 2026/27 academic year.
Candidates must originate from black, Asian, mixed heritage or other ethnic minority communities and demonstrate background characteristics associated with social or economic disadvantage.
The agency has stated these criteria aim to address current underrepresentation of individuals from these demographics within its workforce.
Successful applicants will commence the placement with a fortnight of specialised instruction introducing them to the organisation’s structure and operations.
Following this introductory phase, participants will integrate into active investigative units to gain firsthand exposure to the responsibilities undertaken by intelligence officers.
The programme concludes with participants having the option to pursue application for the agency’s permanent Intelligence Officer Development Programme.
Four days of paid leave are incorporated into the placement schedule.
The agency has outlined that prospective candidates should demonstrate qualities including integrity, respect, creativity, professionalism and a commitment to making a beneficial contribution to the United Kingdom.
Desired attributes encompass natural curiosity, collaborative ability, genuine enthusiasm, adeptness at addressing intricate challenges and dedication to safeguarding the nation.
Applications are processed through the Government Communications Headquarters framework.
Standard eligibility criteria require applicants to hold British citizenship, though those possessing dual nationality that includes British status will also be considered.
Employment conditions typically do not mandate renunciation of non-British citizenship, though limitations on postings, international travel and utilisation of dual nationality may be applied.
Prospective candidates must generally have resided within the United Kingdom for seven of the preceding ten years prior to application.
