A not-for-profit organisation is producing thousands of daily meals to address food insecurity among children during the school vacation period.
Akshaya Patra UK is implementing its Holiday Hunger Initiative throughout 30 districts, encompassing Harrow, to assist youngsters from financially constrained households who no longer receive complimentary school dinners during the summer vacation.
The initiative seeks to reach a portion of the approximately 4.5 million young people in Britain facing potential food scarcity during holiday periods.
A representative for Akshaya Patra UK stated that the summer months ought to be a joyful time for children, not a period of anxiety about meals. Many families confront difficult decisions between covering essential household expenses and providing nutritious sustenance for their children during what should be a carefree break. The programme works to guarantee that children obtain necessary nutrition while offering them chances to experience a summer full of educational activities and fresh adventures.
The organisation creates fresh dishes at its north London kitchen facility, beginning preparations in the early hours, and distributes them to youngsters participating in holiday activity schemes.
The initiative operates through collaboration with holiday club operators and council bodies, backed by funding from the Westminster Government’s Holiday Activities and Food scheme.
Research indicates that one in three young people in Britain resides in a household lacking consistent access to wholesome food. When complimentary school meals are unavailable during holidays, families can face additional weekly expenditure of between £30 and £40.
Akshaya Patra UK has provided almost 900,000 meals from its north London production site since 2020.
The organisation is calling upon individuals, companies, and local community groups to contribute to its summer fundraising effort to help supply meals for vulnerable children. The charity was founded in 2007.
