Government emergency alert warns of serious wildfire risk across England

Published on

An extended spell of dry and sunny conditions has increased the likelihood of wildfires across the country, with officials throughout England and Wales urging residents to exercise greater caution and consider the consequences of their behaviour.

As of today (August 14), a temporary prohibition on single-use grills has taken effect, after the equipment was identified as the cause of numerous blazes that have erupted nationwide.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced the restriction – covering Wales, Scotland, and England but excluding Northern Ireland – would remain effective until authorities determine it is safe to lift the ban.

He additionally cautioned smokers about lighting cigarettes outside and emphasised the importance of disposing of them responsibly.

A blaze in Stourbridge this week razed 19 properties and caused damage to a further 18.

This evening, authorities distributed an urgent notification to mobile phones alerting citizens to the severe fire hazard.

Phone users received instructions to refrain from using grills, open fires, or pyrotechnics, and to contact emergency services without delay upon discovering any fire.

What to do upon spotting a wildfire

Should you be indoors or outdoors and notice a wildfire, certain measures must be followed.

The British Red Cross has provided specific guidance for this emergency scenario.

Dial 999 right away and communicate the fire’s location, scale, and any pertinent details such as the address or OS grid reference or What3Words coordinates to the operator.

You should make every effort to remain composed and ensure you are positioned somewhere secure, clear of any vegetation and smoke.

Those travelling by vehicle have also been advised to shut all windows and air vents upon spotting a wildfire.

If you happen to be inside a residence or other structure when discovering a wildfire, you must also maintain composure and remove yourself to safety – the British Red Cross advises against attempting to extinguish the blaze independently.

Contact 999 and provide your location along with as much useful information as possible.

Seal all doors and windows but refrain from bolting them.

The guidance continues: direct emergency responders to the most suitable entry route for reaching the property. Where feasible, wait at the entrance point and communicate with firefighters upon their arrival.
