The majority of British adults consider their tooth-cleaning technique adequate, yet research indicates merely one in eight individuals actually adhere to the routine dental professionals recommend.

An investigation involving 2,000 participants exposed a considerable disparity between what people believe about their oral hygiene practices and the reality of their habits, with nearly nine in ten failing to consistently implement guidance from experts.

With 63 per cent dedicating less than the advised two-minute duration to toothbrushing, and 16 per cent limiting themselves to a single brushing session daily – half the frequency dentists recommend.

Despite dental practitioners emphasising the necessity of daily interdental cleaning, almost three-quarters of those surveyed neglect this practice, while one half continue using a manual brush rather than an electric alternative.

The research additionally revealed 11 per cent fail to use a fluoride toothpaste as advised, and 17 per cent confessed uncertainty regarding which variety they apply to their teeth.

These findings arrive at a period when, according to the Oral Health Foundation, considerable numbers of people continue experiencing difficulties obtaining dental services, rendering effective home oral hygiene practices increasingly vital.

They additionally note approximately a quarter of UK adults suffer from untreated dental decay, with nine per cent displaying indicators of advanced periodontal disease.

Commissioned by Oral-B, this research coincides with the introduction of their Brush for Better initiative, which involves the brand taking its specially constructed dental vehicle on a tour spanning the country from July through September 2026 – delivering oral health education, specialist recommendations and practical instruction directly into communities throughout the United Kingdom.

Upon completion of the tour, the customised dental vehicle will be gifted to Dentaid – The Dental Charity – becoming part of their collection of mobile dental facilities, which deliver complimentary dental treatment and oral health guidance to communities with limited access to services.

David Ewan, Northern Europe senior director for oral care at Oral-B, stated that maintaining good oral health begins with the routines individuals perform daily at home, yet the findings highlight a pronounced discrepancy between perception and reality concerning how people maintain their teeth.

He explained that this is precisely why ensuring expert guidance remains within reach holds such significance.

By the conclusion of the vehicle tour in November, the aim is to substantially increase the number of individuals practising the recommended oral care routine.

Despite its crucial contribution to overall health, the research additionally revealed oral health frequently receives less priority than other wellness practices, with numerous individuals investing greater effort into maintaining a nutritious diet (52 per cent) and physical activity (47 per cent) compared with caring for their teeth and gums (37 per cent).

When examining different age groups, younger generations demonstrate greater openness to enhancing their oral care practices, with 32 per cent of Generation Z indicating they would refine their regimen given access to additional guidance.

Furthermore, 35 per cent reported avoiding smiling due to embarrassment regarding their teeth, while 48 per cent stated that proper oral health contributes to their self-assurance.

Although 77 per cent seek their dental practitioner for recommendations on optimal oral health practices, 14 per cent attend appointments less frequently than annually, and one in ten have shockingly remained absent from the dental chair for a full five years.

Moreover, certain individuals pursue guidance beyond the dental practice, with 10 per cent turning to artificial intelligence for assistance in improving their brushing technique, while 17 per cent obtain oral health recommendations through social media platforms, according to the OnePoll.com research.

Dr Eva Castro Perea, a dental professional, observed that these outcomes demonstrate continued insufficient understanding regarding the components of an effective oral care regimen.

She noted that cleaning teeth twice daily for two minutes, employing an electric toothbrush, practising daily interdental cleaning and routinely replacing brush heads represent straightforward habits capable of producing substantial improvements in oral health over time.

She emphasised that perfecting these daily routines within the home environment carries considerable significance.
