Kellie Bright, known for her portrayal of Linda Carter in the BBC soap, has confirmed her departure from the long-running programme after more than a decade in the role.
The 50-year-old performer will exit the show, stating that the moment has come to move on from her position on Albert Square.
Linda Carter has become a central figure in the drama, particularly through her involvement in running the Queen Vic pub alongside her husband Mick, portrayed by Danny Dyer.
In a statement about her exit, Bright explained that the BBC production had been her professional base for 13 years and that she had thoroughly enjoyed her involvement. However, she had concluded that this particular juncture marked the appropriate moment to conclude her tenure.
She indicated that the decision was made approximately 12 months prior, and following conversations with Kate Oates and Ben Wadey, they requested she remain to film a significant narrative they had developed. Bright agreed to extend her contract as a result.
She expressed that her relationships with fellow cast members would be greatly missed, while also conveying anticipation for upcoming ventures and additional time with her family.
Throughout her involvement, Bright’s character navigated several intense plotlines, encompassing sexual violence, marital disloyalty, and homicide.
Ben Wadey, serving as executive producer, commented that Bright had been fundamental to the series for the duration of her stay. He described her embodiment of Linda as simultaneously tough and endearing, highlighting the character’s protective nature and impressive range. Wadey noted that the portrayal had resonated strongly with audiences and established her as an enduring fixture in the programme’s history.
He added that her contributions included participation in several memorable and dramatic narrative arcs, and that the entire production team would feel her absence significantly. When Bright informed them of her intention to leave the previous year, substantial plans for the character were already in development, making them pleased she opted to remain until these could be realised.
Wadey confirmed that while considerable work remains before her final appearance, viewers could anticipate a storyline rich in compelling developments.
Bright’s exit follows a pivotal Christmas broadcast in 2023, where Linda killed Keanu Taylor in a flash-forward sequence intended to protect Sharon Watts.
Previously, the character was central to a prolonged storyline involving her assault by Dean Wicks, alongside a relationship with Max Branning that resulted in the birth of his child.
In recent episodes, Linda has been depicted operating a guesthouse alongside her mother Elaine Peacock, portrayed by Harriet Thorpe, and commencing a romantic connection with Clive Masters, played by Jason Durr.
Audiences responded to the announcement with disappointment, observing that the programme would feel fundamentally different without her.
