A university student’s artwork has transformed an overlooked section of the local area after winning a public competition.
The piece, designed by Danling Su, a University of Westminster illustration student, now adorns a former concrete structure at the Northwick Parkside housing scheme in Harrow, situated across from Northwick Park Hospital.
Her concept triumphed in an art contest organized by Sovereign Network Group (SNG) that began in January.
Danling Su expressed that watching her design become a physical artwork proved deeply fulfilling. She noted that it was thrilling to see an idea originally sketched in her notebook become incorporated into an actual neighbourhood setting. She aimed throughout the project to produce a piece that embodies compassion, connection, and belonging. She hopes it offers passengers through Northwick Park a brief moment of solace and encouragement.
SNG approached art students from the University of Westminster’s Harrow campus to submit proposals for converting the location into community artwork.
Residents cast their votes via SNG’s social media platforms to choose Danling Su’s creation from among three shortlisted entries. The design was then realised on the structure during May by mural specialist Miguel Fons, who required almost a fortnight to finish the work.
Miguel Fons described the project as an excellent opportunity. He explained that Danling Su’s concept offered a compelling artistic direction, and helping translate that vision into community artwork proved gratifying. He hopes the piece illuminates the space and provides people with something uplifting and meaningful that brings them together whenever they pass by.
The creation honours the Northwick Parkside neighbourhood by illustrating relationships between medical services, learning, and domestic life.
Natural shapes and botanical elements represent development, while a piece of fruit demonstrates the connection between healthcare and education. A protective character within the design signifies nurturing and safety.
Kalumba Musambachime, SNG’s London and East sales director, stated that this initiative exemplifies community collaboration in practice. From initiating the contest with University of Westminster students to asking residents to choose their preferred concept online, the organization was pleased to unite individuals in producing enduring public artwork. Danling Su’s successful design has converted what was previously an unappealing and disregarded concrete shed into an eye-catching landmark that mirrors the local community’s identity and ambitions. They anticipate residents, visitors, and generations to come will appreciate the artwork for many years.
