Primark slashes prices in move rivals claim is unprecedented

A major fashion retailer has revealed significant store alterations as part of a nationwide overhaul of its pricing strategy.

Primark has launched reduced prices across numerous ranges for women, men, and children as part of what it calls its ‘Iconic Value’ phase, seeking to strengthen its position as the leading destination for budget-friendly clothing on the high street.

Matt Houston, Primark’s chief customer officer, stated that value has become increasingly important to shoppers and for more than five decades customers have relied on the chain as the place to find fashionable items at prices unavailable elsewhere.

He added that the company aims to keep setting the standard for what accessible fashion should offer, ensuring shoppers can feel confident that they will always receive excellent prices without having to sacrifice quality or style.

The retailer announced its new pricing framework would remain valid throughout its 2026 Autumn and Winter seasons, enabling customers to purchase more affordable pieces while maintaining standards for quality, sizing, and design.

Primark indicated these adjustments respond to what shoppers are seeking.

Research conducted for the company showed that approximately half of British consumers (46 per cent) consider value for money the primary consideration when purchasing garments for their families, with sixty per cent stating that affordability is the key driver behind their purchasing choices.

The business also mentioned that shoppers can anticipate new fabric technologies alongside enhancements to sizing and longevity throughout the updated collections.

To assist customers in locating the reduced-price products, Primark locations will display prominent ‘Iconic Value’ notices on applicable items.

The updated pricing takes effect immediately (July 20).

Ted Baker prepares revival following exit from high streets

Ted Baker is arranging a substantial return to the high street almost two years after vanishing from UK town centres.

The fashion label will launch its inaugural new independent UK outlet later this year, close to two years after all its British shops shut down following the failure of its UK retail operator, No Ordinary Designer Label.

The shutdowns concluded the brand’s 36-year tenure on the high street.

A spokesperson for Authentic Brands Group, the owner of Ted Baker, indicated the first standalone outlet would open shortly.

The label has already started a gradual return to physical retail through small shop-within-shop agreements at Selfridges, including its most recent launch at Selfridges Birmingham in the Bullring.

A comparable agreement was introduced at the Trafford Centre in Manchester in May.

Following the failure of its UK retail operator in March 2024, all 46 Ted Baker outlets nationwide shut their doors by August, resulting in numerous job losses.

After these closures, Authentic Brands Group revived the Ted Baker UK website in November, restarting online sales of menswear, womenswear, and accessories while seeking a fresh operating partner.

Ted Baker was established in Glasgow in 1988 and grew to become one of Britain’s most well-known fashion brands, running approximately 550 shops and concessions globally at its height.
