Beloved clothing retailer returns to UK high streets after two-year hiatus

Ted Baker is preparing a significant comeback to UK high streets almost two years after vanishing from town centres across Britain.

The fashion label will launch its inaugural new standalone British store later this year, almost two years after every one of its British branches shut down following the failure of its UK store operator, No Ordinary Designer Label.

The shutdowns signalled the conclusion of the brand’s 36-year tenure on the high street.

A representative for Authentic Brands Group, which holds ownership of Ted Baker, confirmed the first standalone store would open in the near future.

The label has already commenced a measured comeback to physical retail through boutique concessions within Selfridges, including its most recent launch at Selfridges Birmingham’s Bullring location.

A comparable concession debuted at the Trafford Centre in Manchester during May.

Following its UK store operator’s collapse in March 2024, all 46 Ted Baker branches across the nation shut their doors by August, leading to substantial redundancies.

After these closures, Authentic Brands Group reinstated the Ted Baker UK website in November, restarting online trading of men’s clothing, women’s clothing, and accessories while seeking a fresh operational partner.

Ted Baker established itself in Glasgow in 1988 and grew into one of Britain’s most well-known fashion labels, running approximately 550 stores and concessions globally at its height.

Activewear Group Ltd, founded in March 2014, is a clothing and fashion retailer focused on budget-friendly activewear, workwear, and uniforms.

The business, which additionally provides printing and embroidery services, deals directly with major brands and holds solid partnerships with Britain’s leading wholesalers.

According to its LinkedIn profile, the company aims to provide a high quality of service to ensure a great end user customer experience through a cost effective approach.

The business conducts online trading through its website and operates from a 1,750 square foot warehouse in Redditch, with a further 1,500 square foot space functioning as a showroom, packing area, and office/meeting space.

Stuart Kelly and Claire Harsley from Mackay Goodwin Limited took on the role of joint administrators on July 8, according to The Gazette.

Activewear Group had recorded a charge with Companies House in June, merely weeks before entering administration.

The charge signifies a loan or debt guaranteed against the company’s assets, providing creditors with precedence should insolvency occur.

A clearance sale is presently advertised on the Activewear Group website, while other sections remain inaccessible.
