Participation in junior parkrun has been associated with better wellbeing for children, research suggests.

Research conducted by parkrun involving 779 children revealed that three quarters reported feeling more content after finishing a junior parkrun event.

These regular 2 kilometre events take place on Sunday mornings, welcoming children from four to 14 years old, and form part of the Keep Moving This Summer initiative.

As junior parkrun impact and engagement manager, James Thomas explained that junior parkrun provides something straightforward – a free, welcoming, and healthy Sunday morning activity.

He added that organizers hope even more families will give it a try this summer.

Of the 1,375 families who took part in the survey, 84% reported that the runs had enhanced their child’s feeling of accomplishment, while 68% noted a greater enthusiasm for exercise.

Dame Rachel de Souza, children’s commissioner for England, stated that these results support what children have consistently shared with her: spending time outdoors, discovering their local areas, and being with friends and family are essential for their wellbeing.

She mentioned she looks forward to meeting young runners at a junior parkrun this summer.

She emphasized that every child deserves the chance to enjoy the advantages of outdoor play and activity during school holidays, irrespective of their family’s situation.

Sports minister Stephanie Peacock commented that summer should focus on getting outdoors, enjoying the weather, and staying active.

She noted that junior parkrun enables families to do all of these things together in a friendly setting without charge.

She stressed that it is essential every child has the opportunity to experience the benefits of sport and physical activity, both during school and outside it.

Parkrun is a free, weekly gathering where people walk, jog, run, or volunteer.

The main events consist of 5 kilometre courses held in parks and open spaces every Saturday morning.

There are also 2 kilometre events for children aged four to 14 on Sunday mornings.

Participation is entirely free, though registration online is required before attending for the first time.
