This north London shopping mall that just turned 50 could be getting a bold new look

A shopping complex in north London marking its half-century milestone is set to receive a dramatic visual overhaul.

Brent Cross became Britain’s inaugural American-style retail destination when it launched in 1976.

Back then, the concept of permanent covered shopping with ample parking was seen as cutting-edge.

Property owner Hammerson has now filed proposals for an eye-catching contemporary exterior to signal the shopping centre’s future direction and ambitions.

The Brent Cross centre opened its doors 50 years ago – with John Lewis remaining at the location alongside Marks & Spencer and Fenwick, all still trading five decades later.

Harry Badham, development director at Hammerson, explained that Brent Cross has consistently set the standard for excellence among UK retail destinations, pointing out that it represents an original London development and that during its 50th anniversary celebrations, the priority continues to be keeping the centre modern and successful for years to come. He characterized the new façade as a clear indication of this dedication, building on significant previous investment aimed at creating a modern, lively destination for both shoppers and retailers.

Hammerson originally developed the centre, allocating £20 million to construct 800,000 square feet of retail space adjacent to the North Circular road, on land previously home to Hendon Greyhound Stadium.

Its anchor tenants John Lewis, Fenwick and Marks & Spencer all continue to operate at Brent Cross – which Hammerson secured complete ownership of in 2025.

The company states these plans are part of a broader strategy to prepare the centre for the next 50 years, with the redesigned entrance set to provide better visibility and a look that is more cohesive and visually striking.

The design aims to make an impression both during daylight hours and after dark, strengthening the complex’s standing as a significant retail and leisure destination.

The venue has also recently broadened its dining and entertainment options, adding TeamSport indoor karting and bowling lanes last month and introducing the District street food market last year.

Public consultation and community involvement will form part of the planning procedure, though should Barnet Council planners approve the scheme, the transformed appearance should be finished by the end of 2026.
