The parts of London worst hit by hearing difficulties have been identified.
New research indicates that outer London boroughs are seeing particularly elevated levels. The Royal National Institute for Deaf People reports that more than 18 million adults across the UK are either deaf, managing hearing loss, or dealing with tinnitus.
The figures are particularly notable among elderly people, with almost 80 percent of those aged 70 and over impacted.
By employing the NHS Hearing Loss Data resource, Foxholes Care Home discovered that over one million residents of the capital currently live with hearing loss.
The City of London has the highest rate in the capital, with 18.6 percent of its population affected.
Havering comes closely after at 17.9 percent, meaning one in six inhabitants deals with hearing challenges.
Bromley also ranks among the highest, with 17.1 percent of its population estimated to have hearing loss.
Bexley (16.5 percent), Sutton (15.4 percent), and Harrow (15.2 percent) also feature among the most affected areas.
Conversely, the lowest proportions were discovered in Tower Hamlets, where just 8.1 percent of residents are estimated to have hearing loss. Hackney and Newham also recorded low figures, at 9.3 percent and 9.1 percent respectively.
Neil Gandecha, care manager at Foxholes Care Home, explained several key warning indicators. He noted that hearing loss is frequently regarded as a minor matter, though for many individuals it significantly affects everyday life. When someone starts having difficulty with their hearing, ordinary moments such as family conversations, social events, or even watching television gradually become more challenging.
Mr Gandecha listed important symptoms to watch for. He mentioned that consistently needing others to repeat themselves represents an early indication of hearing problems. Increasing the volume on television or radio beyond normal levels serves as an early signal that hearing capabilities may be diminishing. Many individuals with hearing difficulties find it hard to follow discussions in loud settings like restaurants or family occasions, which constitutes a warning sign. Difficulty hearing during telephone calls indicates that hearing wellbeing requires attention. Retreating from social activities happens when someone cannot keep pace with discussions, and this should not be dismissed. Persistent ringing or buzzing in the ears frequently accompanies hearing loss and warrants examination by a medical professional. Regularly misinterpreting words or providing inappropriate responses can suggest that hearing loss is affecting understanding. Leaning forward, making extra effort, or cupping a hand behind the ear to listen better are subtle indicators that deserve attention. Those around a person often notice alterations in hearing before the individual themselves does, so their observations merit consideration.
He emphasised the value of seeking help promptly. Mr Gandecha noted that because hearing loss typically advances gradually, many individuals do not recognise how significantly it is impacting them until it begins affecting their self-assurance and autonomy. Increasing understanding is essential so that individuals can identify initial symptoms and feel motivated to obtain assistance.
