UK stores implement new £13 rule for customers

A growing number of major retailers are adopting a new compensation benchmark as the cost of living pressures persist for British households.

This benchmark involves various chains raising employee compensation to ensure minimum hourly earnings reach £13.

The statutory minimum wage is scheduled to rise to £12.71 per hour in April.

At present, the Real Living Wage sits at £13.45, a figure established by the Living Wage Foundation Charity.

With most retailers typically offering compensation above the Real Living Wage rate, workers can expect additional growth in their income.

The budget fashion retailer Primark was among the businesses to announce this substantial change and confirmed its intentions.

Below is a compilation of other retailers and supermarkets preparing to implement this compensation standard.

Primark

Effective April 1, customer assistants throughout England, Scotland, and Wales will see their compensation raised to a minimum of £13.

Employees at this fashion chain’s London locations will receive £13.71 per hour.

Tesco

Tesco is also getting ready to implement compensation changes that will begin this month. According to The Workers Union, the hourly rate for store assistants is anticipated to reach approximately £13.35 nationwide.

Staff members based in London could see their compensation rise to around £14.71. The revision to Tesco’s pay structure will take effect during the first complete pay period following its rollout this month.

Aldi

The supermarket chain Aldi has shared its revised compensation plan. Starting in April, shop assistants will earn £13.50 per hour across all locations.

Employees at London branches will receive £14.88 per hour.

Lidl

Lidl has indicated that initial hourly rates will increase to £13.45 throughout the country, potentially rising to £14.45 based on tenure. In the capital, compensation is set to reach £14.80 and may increase to £15.30 depending on experience.

Sainsbury’s

This month, Sainsbury’s will raise its hourly compensation to £14.54 from the current £13.23 nationwide.

M&S

Hourly compensation at the supermarket M&S will increase from £12.60 to £13.41 starting April 1st.

Employees working in London will see their wages rise from £13.85 to £14.74.
